Rachel Wood is working with the Forged By Fire team, who are creating a Graphic Novel about stories of heroism and resilience that have come out of tragic fires throughout history. This one (story 2 in the novel) is an inspirational story about Geoffrey Page. On 12th August 1940, Geoffrey Page and his RAF Squadron were sent to intercept a group of German bombers during the Second World War. He was shot down from his aircraft, his fuel tanks ignited but although he was able to bail out of his plane, he received extensive burns to his face and hands. Page’s injuries were severe and it was believed that he would never fly again. However, he became part of experimental techniques for the treatment of burns – a ‘guinea pig’ for doctors. After 15 operations, he returned to active service in the RAF in 1942 but his work as a ‘guinea pig’ was equally heroic as he helped many others receive plastic surgery, which allowed them to live again.
Read Geoffrey Page’s story, answer the questions and write a diary entry for him or one of the others who helped him be a hero by going here.
