Starting on Monday 6 April we’re adding some new fun, but educational, activities to help with home learning.
While keeping to the rules of social distancing, the activities encourage children and young people to ask their parents, grandparents and neighbours about their lives in the present and in the past. Using items from our collection, the fun tasks involve postcards, top trumps, mini dramas, dream clouds and interviews to help develop skills in historical inquiry whilst keeping up social interaction.
The first activity is called Postcard Connections… Rachel piloted this with her own children and parents, printing off the postcards for her children to paint and then photographed them to send via ‘WhatsApp’. Rachel’s parents were over the moon with their postcards and two arrived back the next morning, with a personal note for the children about a very happy memory from last summer. The kids were so excited about the response being so quick but also something just for them. Rachel has printed these out and stuck them up on the wall next to their own paintings.
Activities can be downloaded for free. They do rely on parents helping their children to use the phone or send a photograph or a task via social media, but the questions, stories, memories can be tackled by the children, giving time for parents to get a well earned cuppa!
