The role

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced museum professional, with project management and museum development experience, to lead our exciting new ‘Bright Future: Saltaire’s Heritage’ project.

You will manage the project’s consultancies for business mentoring, external evaluation and museum design. The role  involves conducting options appraisal and feasibility studies, with a budget for working with museum design companies.

You will work alongside a board of trustees, our experienced curatorial and event volunteers, and be supported by a small project management team of two trustees and up to 2 community representatives.

The Saltaire Historical Collection is managed by Saltaire Word Heritage Education Association (SWHEA), an independent charitable body with 8 trustees, currently engaged in working toward museum accreditation. Management of the collection is currently wholly voluntary, and our 18 volunteers are skilled in curatorial and other tasks. It is a warm, welcoming and inclusive place to work, situated in the World Heritage site of Saltaire.

The Collection is currently located within a college of Further Education which means that visits are by appointment only. Good progress has been made on museum accreditation policies and procedures, and the priority is now to identify a publicly accessible location, new museum design and likely costs.

During 2023, SWHEA led local partnership work to assess the barriers to accessing Saltaire’s heritage for ethnic minority and disabled communities in the Bradford District. The partnerships with key community groups will continue throughout the ‘Brighter Future’ project to ensure location and design features will mitigate barriers to access. SWHEA also work in partnership with Bradford Museums and Galleries service, the Saltaire World Heritage Officer, local schools and universities and Saltaire community groups.
