National Culture Recovery Fund supports the Saltaire Collection

Saltaire Collection is delighted to unveil over 50 new storyboards in the village of Saltaire. These bespoke installations, developed by local experts, tell the story of the village and the experiences of people who lived there. This project was funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Cultural Recovery Fund and will enable students of all ages, staff, visitors and residents to connect with the history and heritage of Bradford District.

This installation is well timed, and coincides with the twentieth anniversary of Saltaire’s inception as Bradford’s only UNESCO world heritage site.

The new storyboards run through a number of historic buildings in the village, including the Exhibition, Salt and Silver Buildings, all part of the Shipley College complex, and Victoria Hall.

Rachael Durrett, the Chair for of the Saltaire World Heritage Education Association who manage the Collection, said

We are thrilled that the installation is in place for the students’ return to college and hope that they will inspire new insights into the past and present for all the people who use and visit these spaces.

We are grateful for Cultural Recovery Fund support which has enabled us to share our local story with more audiences, and encourage continued Government commitment to local heritage.

The funding received has also enabled professional restoration of a severely damaged oil painting of Daniel Salt who was Sir Titus Salt’s father. Saltaire Collection has also been able purchase new display equipment to aid planned events later in 2021.
