Netherlands – Saltaire’s story has fans around the world

Two Dutch StudentsAjay Baldewsing and Thomas Koopman (aged 15/16 years) contacted Saltaire Village Info and were passed on to the Saltaire Collection with their request –

A friend of mine and I are in the fifth year of high school in the Netherlands. For our English classes we have to make a documentary, over the Christmas period I was in Saltaire whilst visiting my family in Otley and I was absolutely fascinated by Saltaire and it’s story. That’s why we decided to make a documentary on Saltaire. We are looking for local experts on Salt’s Mill and Saltaire to hopefully appear in our documentary. Would you know of anyone who might be interested in helping us out?

Maggie Smith responded by sending some summary history documents about Sir Titus Salt and Saltaire, with a list of useful books. Ajay and Thomas then requested an interview using Skype and the date was agreed as 12/02 2019. The interview lasted 30 minutes and Maggie was asked 9 questions that the students had prepared in advance. These included ‘Why did Sir Titus decide to build an industrial community? ‘Were the workers homes of better quality than other local homes’; ‘Were the workers made to go to church?’; ‘How big was the population of Saltaire when it was first built’. It was perhaps an indication of how young international learners can get their needs met in this digital age.
