Emily Jane Tennant 1887-1974
Emily Tennant was born in Baildon to James Tennant and Elizabeth Willis. By 1891 they were living at 4. Lane Ends, Baildon with James working as a cabinet maker.
Emily began work in Saltaire Mill in October 1901 aged 14, in the spinning department. She worked there until 1936 and went on to work as a cleaner in the engine room and then in the yarn office for a further 25 years.
From 1911 Emily lived with her parents and younger sister Melissa at 2 Rhodes St. Shipley. In 1921 Emily was living with her Mother,sister and brother-in-law at 4 Baker Street Shipley and then from 1926 onwards with her sister and her family at 23 Wycliffe Rd. Shipley.
Emily Tennant died on 14 Nov 1974 aged 87 and was laid to rest in Nab Wood Cemetery. Shipley.
Long Service award
On the 16 March 1953 Emily received a Long Service Certificate from Salts (Saltaire) Ltd in recognition of her 50 years service.
Emily certainly earned her long service award as she had worked at Salts Mill for 60 years. Amazingly her ‘work /life’ balance never took her far from her Saltaire roots.
I admire her for her dedication to work and I hope she eventually enjoyed the later part of her life in more restful pursuits.
