Our Researchers and Writers Group have been investigating the lives of a wide range of women who lived, studied and worked in Saltaire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They have uncovered some fascinating and inspiring stories.
You can now see some of these stories in our new online exhibition The working women of Saltaire.
In this exhibition we highlight the ‘Everyday Histories’ of women, connected with Saltaire, whose stories challenge the expectations of their times. Some of these women are remarkable not just for what they achieved, or the fields in which these achievements occurred, but for succeeding in a predominantly male-dominated society.
Others’ lives are quieter, more ordinary but are still worthy of recognition and demonstrate the resilience of women and their hunger for self-determination.
Women of today have much to thank their predecessors for and yet many of these lives are hidden in boxes in archives up and down the country. Here we unpack some of these boxes and showcase these admirable women, some of whose stories we tell for the first time.
