A new chapter of heritage, community and education
Construction is officially underway on the James Roberts Centre on Caroline Street, marking a major milestone for Saltaire’s heritage and community. Formerly known as the Community, Arts, Heritage & Future Tech Hub, the facility has been named to honor local mill owner and philanthropist Sir James Roberts.
Delivered by Shipley College, the project is supported by a £6.26 million grant from the Government’s Shipley Towns Fund alongside £200k from the Community Infrastructure Levy.
Transforming access and learning
The James Roberts Centre will bring huge benefits to Saltaire:
- A new home for history: The Saltaire Collection is currently restricted to a small space within the Exhibition Building. This limits public viewing and puts thousands of important artifacts, photographs, and documents at risk. The purpose-built centre will provide accessible exhibition and interpretation spaces.
- Boosting education and economy: In addition to preserving history, the project enhances Shipley College’s vocational learning facilities, supporting student careers, local businesses, and tourism within the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Stay Connected
Throughout construction, heritage-themed hoardings and progress updates will keep the community informed. You can find out more as the construction progresses on the James Roberts Centre:
